Bifocal primary intracranial germinoma in a child. Case report
نویسنده
چکیده
Germ cell tumors located in the central nervous system (CNS) represent less than 4% of the intracranial tumors and affect primarily children and young adults. These tumors frequently arise in the suprasellar and pineal region and in the midline structures around the third ventricle. Germ cell tumors can be divided as germinoma and nongerminomatous tumors regarding the histology. Only 5-10% of all germ cell tumors are found both in the suprasellar and pineal region1 mostly as germinomas. We present a case of isolated primary bifocal germinoma of CNS in a child.

Pearls & Oy-sters: Bifocal germinoma of the brain
• Intracranial germinoma is the most common malignant intracranial germ cell tumor. It usually occurs in children and young adults and with the current therapies, many patients experience long-term survival. • Suprasellar region germinoma can present with isolated hypothalamic–pituitary axis dysfunction such as diabetes insipidus, delayed growth, menstrual irregularities, or precocious puberty,...
متن کاملSuccessful Treatment of Intracranial Germ Cell Tumor: Report of Two Unusual Cases and Literature Review
Primary intracranial germ cell tumor (GCT) is a rare tumor that generally occurs due to developmental anomaly. Although intracranial GCT is sensitive to treatment, a high recurrence rate, treatment-related long-term complications and the heterogeneity of this tumor group make treatment complicated. Moreover, because of its location, hydrocephalus and visual field defect, functional disturbance ...

PURPOSE Bifocal germinoma (BFG) is a rare intracranial neoplasm for which the choice of radiation therapy (RT) field is controversial. Some believe that BFG represents disseminated disease requiring craniospinal irradiation (CSI), whereas others believe that BFG represents localized disease and advocate for more limited fields. METHODS AND MATERIALS We analyzed 20 BFG patients at our institut...

متن کاملBifocal intracranial tumors of nongerminomatous germ cell etiology: diagnostic and therapeutic implications.
BACKGROUND Patients presenting with synchronous bifocal intracranial tumors (masses in the pineal and neurohypophyseal region), detectable human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels (5-100 mIU/mL), and normal alpha feto-protein (AFP) levels (≤10 ng/mL) are often diagnosed empirically with pure germinoma. In such scenarios, pathologic confirmation is often deferred, given that bifocal nongerminom...
